One of the first questions Ritual Talk gets is usually one of the hardest questions to answer: what do you sound like? In a world that favors boxes and binaries, they are dubbed “psychedelic indie rock”. And there are certainly moments in the music that fit that bill to a tee, capturing both the headiness and the fervor of the genre. However, like a cold ice cream cone on a warm day, those moments don’t last forever. People walk away hearing influences from Grizzly Bear to Marvin Gaye to CSN&Y to Dirty Projectors, but ultimately, the Brooklyn outfit's lush instrumentation and exploratory vocal arrangements tinge each song with an unmistakable color, on and off the stage.

Then comes some variation of: what are your songs about? Where does your inspiration come from? What do you write about? Luckily, the answers to these are somewhat more straightforward. Alex DeSimine (vocals, guitar) is the primary songwriter in the band, and has been writing songs for as long as he can remember. He got a $30 bright blue acoustic guitar when he was thirteen and started putting music to words he’d written on long car rides to Grandma’s. The craftsmanship has grown, though the adolescent adoration for expression through music has not left. Writing a song is catharsis to him - the only way he can make sense of his own jumbled mind. These songs represent the ironing out of issues: social, emotional, philosophical - anything that needs sorting out, and some things that just need air. He still plays that guitar today.

The next question is usually an even harder one to answer: how long have you been playing together? By the time Alex and Alex Tremitiere (bass, vocals) moved in together, they had been playing together for almost ten years. Tom Criblez (drums, vocals) moved in at the same time, but only really got to know his new roommates on that first couch they shared. TJ Alcala (keys, vocals) started dating one Alex after meeting the other at college in the Bronx and playing guitar with the two of them. It wasn’t until he returned from two years back home in Texas that he took on a new role behind the keys. Dylan Gleit (guitar, percussion, vocals) had played with both Tom and Alex Tremitiere for a while in different projects before heading south for college. As soon as he moved back to New York, he climbed right back aboard and Ritual Talk was unofficially born.

However, it wasn’t until another year later that the name found its way to their music. Another big move to Bushwick, some new recordings, and a fresh live show featuring all five members singing garnered a new level of excitement - from both sides of the stage - and led to solidifying this energy under the name Ritual Talk. Stream "Rippled Glass", their debut EP on Spotify now, and be sure to catch some of that energy on the road later this year.

LYRICS

Sense

You are all alone, but
So am I
This whole world
Is alone together

So put away your phone
And look me in the eye
When I say
There are still birds of your feather

'Cause there's no one but you
That you can represent
So go and cultivate
Your own uncommon sense
And I won't fault you
For being what you are

Who am I to say
What to do with your mind?
Who am I to say
When I don't see through those eyes?
Where in what world are you?
Please tell me

'Cause there's no one but you
That you can represent
So go and tell them all
Your own uncommon sense
And disregard what you've been taught
About who and how to be
'Cause by now
You've fought too hard

Help, I've Been Dreaming

Help, I've been dreaming
Take me where your love goes
You made it so easy
To keep my mind at bay

I got just a taste
But it sure laid me to waste
I've been up all night
Thinking of your shrinking silhouette
Like the burning cigarette
That you helped me light

Help, I've been dreaming
Take me where your love goes
You made it so easy
To keep my mind at bay

Often I relive
Your gentle fingertips
And your hand in mine
I just can't forget
That sensory vignette
But I'll give it time

'Cause since you went away
My mind's been left to stray
Onto darker roads
I needed you so I
Wouldn't have to let my mind
Watch itself unfold

Help, I've been dreaming
Take me where your love goes
You made it so easy
To keep my mind at bay
Help, I've been dreaming
Take me where your love goes
Or just take me anywhere
Far from here

All In Blue

Rippled glass spills out of view
Ocean all in blue

Surface shields the depths below
How deep it goes

More than I can say
Deeper than you know

Rippled glass is all you see
When you try to see me

More than I can say today

Deeper than I know

Every wave is new from before
Yet always finding shore

More than I can say today

Follow You

Same and yet separate, dodging despair
Who told you anyone need repair?

Meet me where I am and I will follow you

Yelling won't help you when no one can hear
Over the sounds of your yells in their ears

Meet me where I am and I will follow
Though know that you will never have control

Meet me where I am and I will follow
Talk to me with words you know I know
Meet me where I am and I will listen
But know that I expect to have your patience
So meet me where I am and I will follow you

Dancing Still

Sun is come and blue is creeping in
Feel it in my bones and in my skin
I remember feeling this begin
Now I'm waiting for that old sun to rise again

And I loved the way you ran out on the floor
Like you never had the chance to dance before
Now we've got the time for dancing still
So let's dance before we lose the thrill

Still I feel the highest we've become
Feel it from my skin down to my bone
But the roller coaster rages on
Without feeling free, falling to the lowest lows

And I loved the way you ran out on the floor
Like you never had the chance to dance before
And I know that you'll be coming back for more
Now we've got the time for dancing still
So let's dance before we lose the thrill
Now we've got the time for dancing still

Things are better than they were
There is no doubting that
Only we still move in slow-mo

Now I'm clutching at my dreams of you
They never last
If I could hold you in my pillow...

I could lose my mind in a few years
Who knows?
Maybe that's already here
Something's always whispering in my ear
I can't hear too well
Sometimes I'm not here at all

And I loved the way you ran out on the floor
Like you never had the chance to dance before
And I hope that you'll be coming back for more
